About the AWC BaselThe American Women's Club (AWC) of Basel is a nonprofit social and philanthropic organization that was founded in 1947 and currently has about 160 members. It is a group of women of very diverse backgrounds, interests, and ages – but all with a connection to the USA. Membership is open to women that are current or former US citizens or married to US citizens, women of other nationalities that have lived or studied in the US, and to English-speaking women that would simply like to participate in AWC Basel activities. Our members have fun, make life-long friends, and find the support that they often need for facing the challenges of living abroad or in an intercultural situation, while also supporting a variety of philanthropic causes. For membership information, check out our AWC Membership page.

AWC Basel offers a wide array of activities to its members--annual luncheons and parties, monthly programs and activities, and a wide variety of special interest groups that meet weekly, monthly, or just occasionally. The Rhine Times, our club newsletter which is published nine months of the year, keeps members informed of club activities and other community events of general interest. For more information on club activities, check out our AWC Activities page.

AWC Basel founded and continues to maintain a library collection of over 5,000 English-language books. The AWC Library is currently located at Centrepoint. Members of AWC Basel or Centrepoint may borrow books at no charge. For more information, check out our AWC Library page.

Each year AWC Basel donates funds to a variety of Swiss philanthropic organizations. Charitable funds are largely generated by the sale of AWC’s extremely helpful publication for newcomers, Living in Basel, which is available for CHF 35 at Centrepoint, at local bookstores, or through this website. AWC Basel Cookbook, with great recipes (both in German and English) and helpful conversion charts, can be purchased exclusively at Bider & Tanner Bookstore, Aeschenvorstadt 2, at Bankenplatz in Basel.

AWC Basel is a member of FAWCO, the Federation of American Women's Clubs Overseas, an international organization of approximately 80 clubs.AWC Basel's FAWCO Committee organizes speakers, activities, and special projects in a wide range of areas including citizens' rights, the environment, violence against women, etc., and each year AWC Basel contributes funds to the FAWCO Foundation to support grants and scholarships for women and various projects of global concern.
